shatter:::dawn

An intimate event for 10 audience members and 5 performers, shatter ::: dawn walks the picket fence between dance and installation.

Fri. May 24th – 8pm
Mon. May 27th – 8pm
Tue. May 28th – 8pm
Wed. May 29th – 8pm

If the body is a container for multiplicity of meaning, where do recognizable cultural gestures dissolve into abstract shape?
When is the body an art object, a social creature, or both?
What can the body contain?
What are we hiding?
What are we saying when we say nothing at all, and no one is listening?

Emulator

What is original and what a copy? What is authentic movement and how does it carry from one body to the other?

This piece uses repetition and multiplicity, authentic movement and embodied gestures.  Complex and unrecognizable patterns transform into mundane and oversimplified. Then they evolve again into a complicated and elaborate dances.

Created originally for Spiel Uhr series in February 2011, Emulator was also re-edited for video and presented by Low Lives International Festival in April 2011.

Video of original piece you can watch here.

Sour (2010)

Sour (2010) is a duet by Toshi Makihara and Zornitsa Stoyanova commissioned by the Performance Mix Festival in NYC in April 2010. This improvised structure plays with images of old age, dissatisfaction, rage and contentment. The character’s journey leads you through quirky interactions, unexpected events, and uncomfortable and hilarious states.

(10 min)

“The wizard of sonic improv, Makihara has always been a wildly physical performer, and his grimaces and wide-angled moves around the single drum surrounded it with an anticipatory aura, making us almost see the silence from which his Cage-y sounds arose.” ~ Miriam Seidel, Philadelphia Inquirer
